How Can chronic Back Pain Be Treated?

i have had chronic back pain for ten or more years, over the past three years on and off i get the sensation of bubbles moving upward in my lower spine. I have been told it is only muscles spasms and i have taken the prescribed muscle relaxers and the bubble sensation still occurs. I have also while it was happening held my fingertips along the muscles on both sides of my spine the muscles are not moving or twitching while the bubbling is occurring. it does not matter in what position i am in either or if i move while its happening, stretching twisting bending and rubbing the muscles does not stop the sensation, and at times it even feels as if the bones are moving.... I know im not crazy and i just want to know what this could possibly be caused from or could be an early symptom of?

Hi there. The feeling of bubbles moving up and down your spine is called as crepitus, which occurs mainly after degenerative changes present in joints, felt commonly in the knees. This is due to formation of small bone spicules or osteophytes in the bones which can happen around your vertebrae and can give you that feeling. First of all it is nothing to worry about, it can happen, just that your subjective feeling is more than generally what other people feel. Secondly, chronic back pain which you have been having for ten years can be reduced with weight loss, doing physiotherapy for back muscles such as core abdominal muscles and paraspinal muscles strengthening exercises. flexion extension exercises and so on. Also avoid lifting heavy weights and bending down for long periods of time. You can apply local analgesics ointment as and when required. There are other supportive physiotherapy measures like short wave diathermy which might help as well. You can start doing these for starters and see how much you benefit from it. Most of the patients who i see as outpatients benefit from these if done regularly.
